Helping our schools
Briarcrest neighbors – even those who don’t have children in the schools – are invited to be involved with their neighborhood schools. Dick Potter, who represents our District 5 on the Shoreline School Board, says there are two types of volunteer jobs: inside and outside the schools. Whether you are a gardener or a storyteller, there is a niche for you.
Here are some specific volunteer needs at Briarcrest Elementary (B), Kellogg Middle School (K), and Shorecrest High School (SC).
External opportunities:
B, K, SC. Grounds clean up, along the lines of last fall’s Embrace Shoreline event at Briarcrest, where neighbors pulled weeds, raked leave, and planted flowers. Kellogg has three major garden projects underway
B, K, SC. Block watch during lunch and after school hours, simply strolling the neighborhood during TAP and lunch – being visible around the neighborhood
Internal opportunities
B. Classroom or library assistance
B, K. Tutoring. Kellogg has a Hang Time study hour Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30.
B. Materials preparation
B. Mentoring
SC: Homework support activity after school

Mentor kids in local schools: an hour a week can have a big impact. View the flier.
The Shoreline Police Department is accepting volunteers at this time. If you live in Shoreline, and have a minimum of four hours a week to give towards the operation of a storefront, we can certainly use you. You would be required to pass a polygraph test and a background check by the King County Sheriff Department. Most of the duties are by telephone, or by the use of a computer. The police department will provide periodic training to assist the volunteer to perform their assigned duties. This includes computer training where appropriate. The duties performed by a volunteer are too numerous to list, but the following is a partial list of programs: block watch, court reminder calls, crime analysis, fire alarm notifications, pawn shop data, pet licenses, traffic safety, vacation house checks, sex offender notifications, victim call backs, disabled parking notifications; to name a few.
A volunteer is directly responsible to the store front officer. Try it, you will like it, and you will make a lot of new friends.
