South Woods Leadership
South Woods Park can use your help. Native plant species are being overwhelmed by invasive species. A forest assessment determined that there are over 3000 holly stems per acre. New tree growth (regeneration) is predominantly holly. Ivy is still the pervasive ground cover in much of the park even after volunteers have taken a huge amount from trees and the ground. Holly, ivy and other invasive species need to be removed and attractive native species need to be planted.
A vision of what South Woods could be goes well beyond just keeping it ecologically intact. With its location on the doorstep of one school, and three other schools not far away, it could become a great educational resource as well as being a fine public park.
South Woods has been saved by activist groups in the past. It is now time to create a new vision and develop new activism that helps this park reach its full potential. Please make the choice to join work parties that actually improve the park. To learn how to join a work party call Bettelinn or Charlie Brown at 363-5517.
